Mr Caputo is a British Heart Foundation Professor of Congenital Cardiac Surgery at the University of Bristol. He was appointed Senior Lecturer/Consultant in congenital cardiac surgery in 2003 by the University of Bristol, promoted to Reader in 2008 and Professor in 2012.  In 2017 he was given the British Heart Foundation Chair in Congenital Heart Disease. This is a full-time academic appointment with a 50:50 clinical: research split. Mr Caputo's clinical interests include neonatal surgery, complex aortic surgery in young adults, minimally invasive pulmonary valve surgery, and mitral and tricuspid valve repair. He performs on average over 200 complex major cardiac procedures per year with a 30-day mortality rates constantly below 2%. He has been responsible for setting up congenital cardiac surgery units in several developing countries and in January 2014 he was invited to reorganise the Congenital Heart Surgery Program at the prestigious RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago, where he spent eighteen months as Director of Congenital Heart Surgery.

Mr Caputo's research interests include:-

  • developing innovative surgical strategies for Congenital Heart Surgery through randomized trials;
  • improving myocardial protection and CPB strategies;
  • regenerative medicine and tissue engineering in congenital heart disease;
  • ischaemia/reperfusion injury;
  • the use of biomarkers in congenital heart surgery

Mr Caputo has published over 150 peer reviewed original articles and obtained over 30 research grants.
