Mary has worked at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust for many years with her main interest being in cardiology. From the start of her nursing career, she has been fascinated by cardiac conditions and care and treatments for these, particularly congenital heart disease. Mary's career has taken her from ward based care to high dependency care for cardiac patients, as well as a year as a cardiology research nurse.

Current role and experience

Mary is an Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). In this role she works with a team of CNSs, a congenital psychologist, ACHD consultants, congenital surgeons and ACHD youth workers. She is responsible for providing clinical support and care for adults with congenital heart disease while they are in hospital, needing cardiac surgery or cardiac interventions, during pregnancy, end of life and more.

With the growing number of patients in the South West, part of this service is to transition young people coming from paediatrics into adult care. With support from the cardiac paediatric CNS team, youth worker and the consultants, the team create a thorough transition into their care. Mary also gives clinical advice over the advice phone line and co-ordinates patient care.

Interests outside of work

Outside of work, Mary likes to go on walks and runs if the weather is nice. She also trains and plays for her local women’s rugby team.
