Job Title

Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist (Congenital Heart Disease).

Interests / expertise / research in CHD

Works with children and adults with congenital heart disease and main clinical interest is in cardiac arrhythmias and inherited cardiac conditions including channelopathies, cardiomyopathies and aortopathies. Carries out interventional arrhythmia procedures in both children and adults including pacemaker and defibrillator implantation and ablation. Has a clinical interest in sports cardiology and exercise physiology. Holds academic posts with the Universities of Bristol and Exeter and  has a wide range of research interests relating to inherited cardiac conditions and arrhythmias.  Passion is research in exercise physiology and prescription as it relates to congenital heart disease and athletes with cardiac problems.  Has published over 100 scientific papers and 16 book chapters and has given over 100 scientific presentations to national or international scientific meetings.  Has been Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Congenital Cardiology since June 2016.

Current role and experience

Dr Stuart is the Lead Cardiologist for the Arrhythmia Service in Congenital Heart Disease (adults and children) and Lead Cardiologist for the West of England Genomic Medical Centre.   He holds clinics for children with inherited cardiac conditions in Bristol Childrens hospital and for adults with congenital and inherited cardiac conditions in the Bristol Heart Institute. Dr Stuart also holds a clinic for adults with congenital heart disease in Truro which provides a service for Cornwall.

Interests outside of work

Dr Stuart is the Medical Director of SportsCardiology UK – a small company which provides cardiological care for a wide variety of professional, elite and amateur athletes with heart problems (www.sportscardiology.co.uk).  He is a Football Association Expert cardiologist and has also worked with a variety of professional sports organisations.   Dr Stuart is a keen endurance exercise fan and has completed more long distance races and triathlons than is healthy. Sadly, he has very little natural talent, Dr Stuart has an incredibly patient wife, is the lucky father of three adult children (including 2 nurses) and became a grandfather in 2015. Finally,  Dr Stuart is an ever optimistic fan of the Scottish national rugby team and looks forward to them winning the Ruby World Cup in 2019!
