Consultant Cardiologist and Sub Specialty Lead for Adult Congenital Heart Disease and Maternal Medicine

Interests / expertise / research in CHD

Dr Curtis is particularly interested in all aspects of maternal cardiology, from contraception and pre-pregnancy counselling to the care of the pregnant woman with heart disease. She is also interested in inherited heart muscle disease and diseases of the aorta, such as Marfan’s syndrome.

Dr Curtis trained in Edinburgh, London, Cardiff and Bristol and is accredited in trans-thoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography. She regularly presents and chairs at regional and national cardiology and echocardiography meetings. She has published in her areas of expertise and in heart failure. Her research interests include congenital heart disease in pregnancy.

Current role and experience

Dr Curtis runs ACHD and Inherited Cardiac Conditions clinics at the Bristol Heart Institute and also outreach ACHD clinics in Cheltenham General Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. She is the Lead Cardiologist for Obstetric Medicine at University Hospitals Bristol, which is a service run jointly by cardiologists, obstetricians and anaesthetists in providing care for pregnant women with heart disease across the South West of England. Dr Curtis set up and runs the Regional ACHD Training Programme for the South West and South Wales and is Co-Founder and Director of the Bristol and Cardiff ACHD Echo Course (est. 2016).

Interests outside of work

Dr Curtis is a keen amateur triathlete, runner and open water swimmer. She is an avid member of the informal BHI book club and enjoys spending time with her two sons and an expanding menagerie of pets!
